There's a fire truck in the street. A real, red fire engine. With a ladder on the roof. But there is no fire. The fire truck belongs to the neighbor. The neighbor is a firefighter. And now the neighbor is at home drinking a cup of coffee with the other firefighters. Poppedijn and Oelepetoet are standing by the fire truck watching. It is very big and very red. There are fire hoses and taps on the side of the fire truck. Poppedijn carefully touches a fire hose. Oelepetoet points to the taps. “When I turn on the tap, the fire truck empties completely,” says Oelepetoet, “and the entire street floods.” Poppedijn feels the door of the fire truck. And what is that?
The fire engine door is not locked. The door opens. “Do you dare to go in?” asks Poppedijn. “I do,” says Oelepetoet, “I will become a firefighter later.” Oelepetoet clambers very bravely into the fire truck. Now that Oelepetoet has climbed in, Poppedijn also dares. And she also carefully climbs into the fire truck. The inside of the car is almost as beautiful as the outside. It has a large steering wheel. And next to the steering wheel there are all kinds of meters and buttons. There is also a big red button. “What would that be for?” asks Poppedijn. “That is for the siren,” says Oelepetoet, “in case of fire.” “Would the siren work?” asks Poppedijn. Poppedijn and Oelepetoet have to think about that for a moment. “I don't think so,” says Oelepetoet. “I think so,” says Poppedijn. Poppedijn presses the red button. Suddenly a blue light waves through the street. And the siren is wailing. Poppedijn and Oelepetoet are terrified. But then they start laughing. Oelepetoet pulls wildly on the steering wheel. He's really a firefighter now. Poppedijn sits with her arms in the air and screams with joy. But six firefighters come running from the neighbor's house. Their caps are tilted on their heads and one firefighter even still has his cup of coffee in his hand. Then the firefighters see Poppedijn and Oelepetoet in the car. Neighbor wants to get angry but the other five firefighters start laughing. Then the neighbor laughs too. Because if such a small fireman and such a small firewoman can make so much noise, that is also funny.
